‘Soul Food Scholar’ Adrian Miller Guest of Honor at Unique Dining Experience for MLK Birthday
Hardette Harris hosts chef table, The Dream Dinner, featuring best-selling author
Author and food activist Adrian Miller is ending 2013 on top of the world. His book, Soul Food: A Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, One Plate at a Time (UNC Press) made the Kirkus Reviews’ Top 10 Non-Fiction Books of 2013 and Booklist’s Top 10 Food Books of 2103 lists. The former White House aide under Bill Clinton and self-professed “recovering lawyer” showcased soul food and also introduced the world to some talented chefs and cooks, including Webster Parish native, Hardette Harris, a personal chef and culinary lifestyle expert. Harris’s grandmother Mrs. Suvillar Saulter Harris’s purple hull pea recipe is one of the 22 featured in Miller’s best seller.
In tribute to the book, Adrian Miller and soul food, Hardette Harris is hosting a private chef’s table, The Dream Dinner, during the Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday weekend in her hometown of Minden, Louisiana. On the menu will be some of the favorite foods of the late reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and other fare taken directly from Miller’s book. “It was a privilege being interviewed by Mr. Miller for his book. The Dream Dinner a proper introduction to the area, the food and of course, the people that inform my work as a chef.”
On Saturday, January 18, Harris will head up a crew of Minden citizens who will contribute in the kitchen and service of her chef’s table. She will lead a table conversation between Mr. Miller and guests representing the racial diversity of Minden and its surrounding area.
“The Dream Dinner will be at The Farm, a property bequeathed to Cultural Crossroads with the express purpose of bridging the racial divide of Minden. I can’t think of a better place or occasion to create more history,” states Harris.
On Friday, January 17, Mr. Miller will be signing his book at The Multicultural Center of the South in Shreveport and doing another signing and greet at The Farm in Minden on Saturday before the dinner. Among the partners for the event is Cuisine Noir magazine.
Chef Harris says, “We are also utilizing social media to promote his itinerary in the area both before and after. We’re also pleased to be participating in the Points of Light Foundation’s America’s Sunday Supper events commemorating Rev. King’s birthday though our dinner is on a Saturday.
“We want to promote unity in the form of dialogue centered on a personal experience such as dining. We just want this family dinner setting to be the start of learning how to love and respect one another like family.”
